Monster Inc is a computer-animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2001. The film revolves around a group of creatures who work at the fictional company Monsters, Inc., an energy-producing factory that harnesses the screams of children to power their world of Monstropolis. The film follows the main character, a furry blue monster called James P. Sullivan (Sully), and his one-eyed friend and assistant, Mike Wazowski, as they accidentally uncover a deeper conspiracy that threatens to upend their company and the world they inhabit.
The film's director, Pete Docter, drew inspiration from his own childhood fears of monsters in his closet and the Pixar team's brainstorming session on the idea of "what if monsters were afraid of us?" Over the next five years, the film was developed with a team of animators, writers, and artists, utilizing advanced technology to create a world full of vividly textured monsters, each with their own distinct personality and design.
Upon its release, Monster Inc was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $577 million worldwide and winning several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Song for "If I Didn't Have You" by Randy Newman. It would go on to become a beloved staple of children's films and spawn a prequel film (Monster's University) and various merchandise and spin-offs, including a Disney theme park attraction.
